| Our Maurice Amado Sephardic Education Project
has come to a close for the 1999-2000 academic school year. This
year, over 750 students, primarily fourth graders, from Adat Ari El, Malibu
Jewish Center and Synagogue, Kadima Hebrew Academy, Pressman Academy, Sinai
Akiba Academy, Stephen S. Wise Day School, Temple Israel of Hollywood,
Valley Beth Shalom, Emek Hebrew Academy, Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy,
Maimonides Academy, Ohr Eliyahu Academy, West Valley Hebrew Academy and
Etz Jacob Hebrew Academy participated in a four-week program designed to
introduce the students to Sephardic Music and its relationship to Sephardic
history, religion and culture. Led by our inspiring and enthusiastic
Teaching Artists Andrea Comsky, Shira Adler, Christopher Hardin and Leslie
Lashinsky, these students were able to gain a new appreciation for Sephardic
Music and the role it plays in their Jewish heritage.
The culmination of the Maurice Amado Sephardic Education Project
enabled each student to attend a live Los Angeles Jewish Symphony performance
of the Sephardic music which they studied. The previous four
weeks prepared the students to be active listeners at a live concert, something
which was a first for many of the attending students. This year,
the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony presented two concerts in order to involve
all participating students. The first was held on Friday, May 31st
at 10:30 a.m. at Stephen S. Wise in the Main Sanctuary. Over 500
students attended this concert, which was covered by the Los Angeles Times.
In addition, almost 300 students from the Orthodox Day Schools attended
a second performance on Friday, April 7th at 10:00 a.m. at Harkham Hillel
Hebrew Academy. Both concerts were made possible by a Major Grant
from the Maurice Amado Foundation, as well as from additional funding from
the Music Performance Trust Fund, Local 47, and the Los Angeles County
Arts Commission.
We would once again like to express our deep appreciation and thanks
to the Maurice Amado Foundation for making this program possible for three
consecutive years. We look forward to expanding this highly
successful program to additional schools in the years to come.
