Biography of
Lucas Richman

Lucas Richman has been the Assistant Conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since 1998 and also presently holds the post of Principal Conductor of the Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra. He served as the Principal Conductor for the Pasadena POPS Orchestra (CA) from 1997 to 1999, and as Assistant Conductor for the Pacific Symphony from 1988 to 1991. He has appeared as guest conductor with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Spokane Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony and the Colorado Springs Symphony Orchestra, among others. A recent highlight includes Mr. Richman's invited participation in 1997 as one of eight conductors in the American Symphony Orchestra League’s National Conductor Preview with the Omaha Symphony which resulted in his being named as a Catherine Filene Shouse Foundation Conductor for 1998-99 season.

Mr. Richman won critical acclaim for his musical direction of the 1995 revival of Leonard Bernstein's Candide at Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre, and also conducted there for Matthew Bourne's sensational presentation of Swan Lake. Earlier in his career he toured with West Germany's Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Orchestra, where he was one of four conductors from around the world selected by Leonard Bernstein to share the maestro's podium for concerts presented in London and Moscow. He has also worked with many film composers as their conductor including such films as Academy Award-nominated As Good As It Gets, Face/Off, Seven, Breakdown and Anastasia.

As a composer, Mr. Richman continues to develop an impressive and diverse catalog which has received international exposure. His works not only include solo and chamber ensemble compositions, but also numerous orchestral pieces, ranging from concerti and contemporary tone poems to innovative selections for pop programs and youth concerts. May of 1999 heralded the premiere of a new choral work commissioned and written for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, WAKE ME A SONG, while in 1997, Mr. Richman conducted the premieres of his cantata entitled THE SEVEN CIRCLES OF LIFE with the Spokane Symphony and his composition BE A CONDUCTOR with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The last four years alone have seen performances of his music by over forty orchestras across the United States.

From 1994 to 1998 Mr. Richman served as founder and director of the Stephen Wise Music Academy in Los Angeles. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music/Violin from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1984, and received his Masters of Music degree in Conducting from the University of Southern California in 1987.
