| The
Los Angeles Zimriyah Chorale was founded in 1997 by Cantor Ira Bigeleisen
and Rand Harris. It was their dream to form an outstanding Jewish
choir from the Los Angeles area which would travel to Jerusalem to perform
in the 18th Zimriyah in August 1998 and would represent America’s second
largest Jewish community. Nick Strimple
was selected as the choir’s artistic director and he has remained so ever
since.
The
choir’s appearance in Jerusalem in August 1998 was historic and triumphant.
LAZC received wide acclaim for its performances and for its repertoire.
Its audiences were treated to Jewish music written by many of Southern
California’s most gifted composers.
Following
its return from Jerusalem the choir elected to maintain its existence and
expand its repertoire and mission. LAZC performed extensively throughout
performance of Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony #3, “The Kaddish” together
with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra in Nuremberg, Germany. The
project entitled “Sounds of Healing” was lead by the LAZC and brought together
200 singers from Los Angeles, Toronto, and Tel Aviv to perform this important
work before enthusiastic and appreciative audiences in Los Angeles at UCLA’s
Royce Hall and in Nuremberg before sold out houses of over 5000 persons
at Meistersinger Halle.
LAZC
has been invited to perform in venues throughout the world and continues
its mission of bringing Jewish music, particularly music written by Southern
California Jewish composers, to audiences in America and abroad.
