Andrea Clearfield's
compositions for instrumental and vocal soloists, mixed chamber ensembles, chorus,
orchestra, film and dance are performed internationally. Her works
have been performed by such noted artists as Carol Wincenc, Edgar Meyer,
Froydis Ree Wekre, Ed Barker and David Wetherill, ensembles such as RELACHE,
PRISM, HILDEGARD PLAYERS, VOCES NOVAE er ANTIQUAE and CUBE, and organizations
and venues such as the SCI National Conference, Festival of Women Composers
International, International Horn Symposium, Conservatoire de Musique in
Luxembourg, Norges Musikkhogskole in Norway, Svenska Hornsallskapet in
Sweden, Mid-American Composers Conference, International Dance Week in
Dresden, International Performance Art Symposium in Kyoto, South
Bay Chamber Music Society, and the Sarasota, Norfolk, Banff and Aspen Music
Festivals. She has received grants and awards from ASCAP, Meet
the Composer, The American Music Center, Britten-on-the-Bay, The University
of the Arts, Temple University, Muhlenberg College and the Philadelphia
Community Education Center as well as numerous commissions. In December
of 1998 she received an Award from the American Composers Forum for Outstanding
Achievement and in 1996 she was the winner of the International Alliance
for Women in Music SEARCH FOR NEW MUSIC for On the Pulse of Morning, a
cantata for chorus, soloists and orchestra set to poetry by Maya Angelou.
Songs of the Wolf for horn and piano appears on the CD of the same
title on Crystal Records, recorded by Froydis Ree Wekre and the composer
in Oslo, Norway, 1996. Upcoming premieres include commissioned works
for the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony at Royce Hall, UCLA, the Hoffmann/Goldstein
duo at Merkin Hall, NY the Music Group of Philadelphia with Orchestra 2001,
and the Pennsylvania and Delaware Music Teachers Association Conventions.
Her works are published by the Hildegard Publishing Company, JOMAR Press
and International Opus.
Ms. Clearfield is on the Composition Faculty
of The University of the Arts and the Associate Piano Faculty of the Sarasota
Music Festival. A native of Philadelphia, she received a BA in Music from
Muhlenberg College where she graduated with Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta
Kappa Honors and first place awards in Performance and Musicianship.
She received an MM in Piano Performance from The University of the Arts
as a student of Susan Starr, and is currently a Doctoral Candidate in Composition
from Temple University where she is a Presidential Scholar and the 1999
recipient of the John Henry Heller, Jr. Memorial Award for Excellence in
Composition.
As a pianist, she has performed and recorded
with numerous soloists and ensembles, including the RELACHE Ensemble and
the Court of the Dalai Lama. In addition, Ms. Clearfield is the host,
founder, and producer of the Philadelphia SALON Concert Series, featuring
contemporary, classical, jazz, electronic and world music, now celebrating
its thirteenth year. |
