The LAJS Chamber Players join several talented young musicians from the Los Angeles area in a tasty sampler of Jewish music from around the world. Works performed include music by Bloch, Prokofiev, Gershwin, Richman and Adler.

Brilliant young violinist Lindsay Deutsch returns by popular demand.

The Los Angeles Jewish Symphony performs a free Sephardic Education Concert at Temple Israel of Hollywood. This concert will explore the relationship between Sephardic and Mariachi music as part of an educational program for 3rd to 5th grade students from LAUSD public schools and Jewish Day School students. The program is sponsored by the Susan and Leonard Nimoy Foundation, and is part of the AP Properties, LTD Arts Development Fee commitment through the Cultural Affairs Department, City of Los Angeles and the Jewish Federation's Tel Aviv/Los Angeles Partnership . The public is invited.

Voices of Women

 

As part of the celebration of National Women's History Month in March 2004, the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony will join with other California orchestras in a statewide salute to female composers and conductors. This effort has been initiated by The Women's Philharmonic in partnership with the Association of California Symphony Orchestras.    In support of this effort, LAJS' renowned conductor and founder, Dr. Noreen Green (one of California's few female conductors), will conduct a concert of Jewish music featuring the works of five contemporary female composers.    The concert is part of the Symphony's 10 th anniversary celebration.

 

The concert's repertoire will feature the works of six contemporary female Jewish composers-

Michelle Green Willner, Maria Newman, Meira Warshauer.

Andrea Clearfield, Sheli Nan, and Sharon Farber.

 

This concert is sponsored by the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department and USC Casden Institute for the Study of the Jewish Role in American Life.

The 1st Annual LAJS Golf Tournament and Concert

takes place at the

Woodland Hills Country Club

John Anson Ford Theatre
The Los Angeles Jewish Symphony performs a concert of Yiddish and Sephardic music as part of the John Anson Ford Summer Concert Series. The first part of the concert will feature the U.S. premiere of contemporary composer/conductor David Stern's Clarinet Concerto, featuring virtuoso clarinetist, Leo Chelyapov, the new Klezmer sensation from Russia, and contemporary composer.  The concert will include the West Coast Premiere of  Paul Schoenfield's "Klezmer Rondos" for solo flute and tenor. This work will feature flutist David Shostac and renowned Cantor Alberto Mizrahi, known as the "Jewish Pavarotti". Schoenfield's "Klezmer Rondos" was written using Eastern European modes and incorporates Hassidic-style songs, marches, and dances, and other Jewish folk songs. After intermission, the repertoire will include vocal selections in both Yiddish and Ladino sung by Cantor Mizrahi accompanied by the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony.
